READ: Mark 9:38-41

They couldn’t do it!

That’s what the father said of the 9 disciples that had been left in the valley whilst Jesus, Peter, James, and John were on the mount.

Now this.

The very thing they failed to do; he’s doing.

And they don’t like it.

“We forbade him, because he was not following us” (Mark 9:38)

Wait . . .

Never mind the fact he was exercising the power of Jesus’ name responsibly and helpfully.

Never mind the fact that God was obviously blessing his ministry—that demons were being cast out and human victims delivered.

Never mind the fact that this unknown exorcist was helping to accomplish the very task for which He came—to destroy the work of the devil.

. . . because “he was not following us,” said John, “we forbade him.”

This jealous and exclusive spirit of John is the root of all denominational rivalries and pettiness which has divided His church throughout the ages. If you don’t think like us, do things that we do, worship like us, or whatever—you will be condemned.

As we begin our week together let’s remember these things:

1. Every servant of Jesus should be respected. They may belong to a different church; their systematic theology may not be yours; they may advocate another system of baptism; or may approach evangelism differently—but, if they serve in Jesus’ name and if people are being saved, let’s celebrate what God is doing through their ministry!

2. Every service for Christ should be rewarded. People are different. We have different giftings, different strengths, and different weaknesses. Let’s function together to serve Him and grow the body of Christ, His church. Even one who “gives . . . a cup of water in the name of Christ” shall be rewarded.

As we start a new week together remember the message from Mark 9:We’re on the same team!
